Windows – Critical Security Issue

A critical vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows (all versions). A patch was released yesterday. Please check your computer to make sure that this patch has been installed on your computer.

Automatic Updates will protect your computer IF you have your computer configured to automatically install the updates. However, people often turn that feature off.

You can check whether it is installed by going into the Control Panel of your computer and looking at the list of installed software. You will need to make sure there is a check in the box beside ‘Show Updates’ in order to see the needed information.

In Add/Remove Programs, look for KB958644 installed on or after 10/23/2008. If it is listed, your computer is protected. If not, you need to install the update.

To automatically download and install updates, go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Accept all prompts and select Express install

Building Research Skills with Social Bookmarking

<a href=” >Diigo v3As a user of Del.icio.us, I enjoy the ability to use tagging to take my favorites with me to whatever computer I happen to be using at the time. I’ve also benefitted from Del.icio.us’ networking features as I’ve used tags added by members of my network. Because of my positive experiences with Del.icio.us, I’ve encouraged my students to create accounts and utilize this aspect of the Web 2.0.

However, I’m learning about another tagging site, Diigo, that goes a step further and may be more beneficial for use when doing research. According to their website, Diigo offers the following features:

  • Highlighting of the web
  • Adding sticky notes
  • Searching findings from any PC or iphone
  • Creating groups to pool resources
  • Discovering quality resources on any subject
  • Getting personalized recommendations

Let’s Go Glogging

Having recently learned about glogs, I faced a dilemma. Do I allow my students to utilize problem solving and collaboration skills to learn how to create a glog when I haven’t already created one OR do I postpone introducing the use of glogs until I have a time to learn how?

Since my students had access to a lot of pictures and video from homecoming, I elected to have them learn how to glog using those resources. The free glogs were created on Glogster.

From this experience with glogging, I believe that the skills the students learned while figuring out how to glog far exceed skills they would have learned if I had directed their activity.
